Dr. Gabor Mate on the Myth of "Normal" via Mindfulness 360 - Center For Mindfulness

Capitalism as a Barometer of Normalcy

is an Ill Advised Model for Sanity, Wellness and Health

Physician Dr. Gabor Mate began his interview by addressing the 'myth of normal' that divides us into the normal and the abnormal with pathological traits. Dr. Mate mentions that he doesn't see a division, but a continuum where mental distress, [to] some degree, is present in all of us. He explains how mental distress and pathology are largely a result of a materialist culture that "idealizes individualism and ignores our emotional needs".

Capitalism is Killing Us

Gabor Maté CM (born January 6, 1944) is a Hungarian-Canadian physician and author.[1] He has a background in family practice and a special interest in childhood development, trauma[2] and potential lifelong impacts on physical and mental health including autoimmune disease, cancer, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD),[3] addictions and a wide range of other conditions.

Maté's approach to addiction focuses on the trauma his patients have suffered and looks to address this in their recovery.[4] In his book In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction, Maté discusses the types of trauma suffered by persons with substance use disorders and how this affects their decision making in later life.

He believes in the connection between mind and body health. He has authored four books exploring topics including ADHD, stress, developmental psychology, and addiction. He is a regular columnist for the Vancouver Sun and The Globe and Mail.
